Best for: Summer-half stays in Helsinki for nomads chasing safety + nature density.

Finland is on the same playbook as Sweden — no DNV, residence requires a real business case, and the winter is darker than most nomads romantically expect. Helsinki is compact, well-connected, and ranks at the top globally on safety and trust. Best as a June–August base; outside that window, the cost-to-light ratio doesn't pencil.

Self-employment residence permit; no formal DNV. Schengen.

How to apply for a Finland self-employment residence permit

The standard pathway for nomads moving to Finland. Specific income tests, processing times, and document requirements live in the visa story above and per-city cards — these are the steps you take in order.

  1. Get a Y-tunnus (Finnish business ID)

Finland's entrepreneur residence permit requires registering a Finnish business and receiving a Y-tunnus (business ID). Register a sole proprietorship (toiminimi) or a limited company (osakeyhtiö) at the Finnish Patent and Registration Office. Toiminimi is simpler and the standard freelance vehicle.

  2. Apply via Migri's Enter Finland portal

Submit through enterfinland.fi — Migri (Finnish Immigration Service) handles all entrepreneur permits. Bring passport, business plan, Y-tunnus registration, financial proof (~€1,000+/mo income), accommodation proof, and proof of pension insurance enrollment.

  3. Show economic-tie evidence

Finland's Center for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY) reviews business viability. Provide existing client contracts, professional credentials, and a 2-year financial projection. Foreign-only clients are accepted but local market activity strengthens the case.

  4. Wait 1–3 months

Finnish processing is among the faster of any EU self-employment route — typically 1–3 months. Approval comes as a 1-year permit (sometimes 2 years for stronger cases).

  5. Register at the Digital and Population Data Services Agency

Within the permit's first weeks, register at the Digital and Population Data Services Agency (Digi- ja väestötietovirasto / DVV) for a Finnish personal identity code. Required for banking, healthcare, mobile contracts, and most services.

  6. Renew toward permanent residency at 4 years

Entrepreneur permits renew for 2-year periods. After 4 years of continuous residence, you can apply for permanent residency (P-tilapäinen → P-vakinainen). Finnish citizenship requires 5 years plus Finnish or Swedish language proficiency.

Process subject to change — confirm current rules with the Finland consulate before booking flights.
