Field notes

Eastern Germany's largest city behind Berlin — the post-DDR creative-renewal story par excellence. Plagwitz (the post-industrial creative quarter, often called "Hypezig"), Südvorstadt (the residential anchor), and the historic Zentrum are the typical nomad cores. Same German visa story. The structural draws are genuinely cheap rents (the cheapest of Germany's top-10 cities), a deep classical-music heritage (Bach, Mendelssohn, Wagner all spent significant time here; the Gewandhaus orchestra dates to 1743), and a youth-and-arts scene that has drawn international attention since 2010.

Continental temperate (Eastern Germany) — meaningfully colder winters than the western German peers because of the Baltic exposure and the lack of Atlantic moderation. Winter (December–February, 0–1°C average) brings regular sub-zero stretches and snow accumulation. Summer (June–August, 17–19°C average) is mild and pleasant. Spring (April–June) and summer are the cleanest working windows.
