Best for: Long visitor stays in London, Edinburgh, or Manchester between EU resets.

The UK is generous on visit length — 6 months at a stretch for most western passports — but punitive on the line between visiting and living. HMRC's Statutory Residence Test is the rule that bites first; spend more than 90 days with multiple ties and you're tax-resident whether you want to be or not. Use the UK as a long visitor stop or a Schengen reset, not a base, unless you commit to the Innovator Founder or Skilled Worker route.

Visa story

Standard Visitor 6 months for many passports; no formal nomad visa. Outside Schengen.

Open the per-city visa cards on each city page for the specific income tests, durations, and program names. None of this is legal advice — confirm with the consulate before booking.

How to enter United Kingdom as a digital nomad

The standard pathway for nomads moving to United Kingdom. Specific income tests, processing times, and document requirements live in the visa story above and per-city cards — these are the steps you take in order.

  1. Apply for ETA before flying

From 2025, all non-UK/non-Irish nationals (except those with existing visas) need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before traveling. Apply at gov.uk; cost £10, valid 2 years, multi-entry. Critical: the UK is not in the Schengen Area.

  2. Enter on the 6-month Standard Visitor allowance

Most passports get 6 months per entry as a Standard Visitor. Border officers strictly enforce stay purpose — carry proof of accommodation, onward travel, ties to home country, and (if asked) financial means.

  3. Track time — informal annual cap

While 6 months per entry is the formal cap, the UK Home Office informally flags repeat-visit patterns suggesting de-facto residence. Stays totaling 8–10 months in any 12-month period attract questioning. Use Nomada's UK Statutory Residence Test calculator to track.

  4. For longer: Skilled Worker, Innovator Founder, or Global Talent

Skilled Worker (subclass 2) requires a sponsoring UK employer and a Skilled Occupation List role. Innovator Founder visa is for tech founders with endorsed business plans. Global Talent is for top-tier talent (digital, science, arts) — among the few that don't require employer sponsorship.

  5. Don't work for UK clients on a visitor visa

Standard Visitor visa explicitly prohibits employment with UK entities. Remote work for foreign employers/clients is technically tolerated since 2024 (Home Office clarification) but the policy is unsettled — long stays attract scrutiny.

  6. Plan for tax residency — the Statutory Residence Test

UK tax residency is determined by the Statutory Residence Test (SRT) — a complex day-count + ties test. Use Nomada's UK SRT calculator to track. Stays beyond ~120 days/year with significant UK ties (family, accommodation, work, prior residency) trigger residency.

Process subject to change — confirm current rules with the United Kingdom consulate before booking flights.
