UAE's capital and second-most-populous emirate — more institutional, calmer, and arguably more livable than Dubai (1.5 hours by road). Saadiyat Island has the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the Guggenheim under construction, and NYU Abu Dhabi's campus. The Corniche walks 8km along the Gulf. UAE's Remote Work Visa (1-year, $5k/mo income) launched 2022; the Golden Visa offers 10-year status for higher categories. Tax-free income is the structural draw for high-earning nomads. Summer (June–September) is genuinely brutal (45°C+) and quiet; the long-stay window is October–April.

UAE Virtual Working Programme (also marketed as "Remote Work Visa") — 1-year renewable remote-work residency, USD 5,000/mo income proof. Issued by GDRFA Dubai but valid across all Emirates. Golden Visa (10-year) is the longer-term alternative for higher-earner categories. Standard 30-60 day visa-on-arrival for many Western passports covers shorter stays. No income tax in the UAE.

Editorial estimates. Not financial advice. The 4% rule is a planning anchor, not a guarantee — sequence-of-returns risk and tax-jurisdiction friction (US-LLC / FEIE / state residency) can move the real number meaningfully. See our expat tax directory for the cross-border side of the math.
