Car-free island in the Yucatán's northeast — a 30-minute ferry from Chiquilá (3 hours from Cancún by bus + ferry). Population around 2,000 with a dirt-road main strip and a famous whale-shark season May–September. Wi-Fi was historically the weakest part of the Yucatán nomad triangle but has improved with Starlink-equipped guesthouses 2023-2025. Cost is higher than Mérida or San Cristóbal (island premium — almost everything is shipped in) but lower than Tulum or Playa. Mexico's 180-day tourist permit applies — the same generous policy as the rest of the country, but immigration crackdowns 2022–2023 mean initial stamps may be 30-60 days instead of the full 180.

Standard Mexico FMM tourist permit — up to 180 days at officer discretion; same policy as the rest of Mexico, with shorter initial stamps (30-60 days) common post-2022 crackdown.

Editorial estimates. Not financial advice. The 4% rule is a planning anchor, not a guarantee — sequence-of-returns risk and tax-jurisdiction friction (US-LLC / FEIE / state residency) can move the real number meaningfully. See our expat tax directory for the cross-border side of the math.
