Tofo (officially Praia do Tofo) is 22 km from Inhambane on Mozambique's central coast — a fishing village with one of Africa's densest whale shark and manta ray populations year-round. The dive scene is the entire economy: Peri-Peri Divers, Liquid Adventures, and Tofo Scuba are the established operators. Backpackers and divers cluster around the village center and the long beach south; longer-stay nomads go to villas on the bluffs above. Internet is patchy — Vodacom Mozambique 4G works in town, fiber is rare; Starlink is increasingly used at lodges. Closest international airport is Inhambane (regional connections via Maputo or Johannesburg).

Program
Mozambique eVisa
Typical max stay
1 months
Mozambique launched eVisa in 2023 — 30-day tourist entry (USD 50, online application, 5-day processing). Extensions possible at Maputo but bureaucratic. Longer-term residence requires significant documentation and is not nomad-friendly.

Editorial estimates. Not financial advice. The 4% rule is a planning anchor, not a guarantee — sequence-of-returns risk and tax-jurisdiction friction (US-LLC / FEIE / state residency) can move the real number meaningfully. See our expat tax directory for the cross-border side of the math.
