Field notes
Genuinely cheap, genuinely chaotic. Zamalek is the expat anchor; Maadi the quieter alternative. Egypt's nomad-visa story is still informal — most foreigners are on tourist visas with periodic runs. Wear-the-city slowly.
Cooler than Dubai but the air is dustier (regular sandstorms, especially Mar–Apr — the khamsin). Summers are hot dry (30-32°C) but workable indoors. Winter (Dec–Feb) is the headline window — bright, mild, almost no rain.
