Field notes
Cappadocia village in central Anatolia, surrounded by fairy-chimney rock formations carved into the volcanic-tuff landscape over millions of years. The town itself is small (population ~2,000) — most accommodations are cave hotels carved directly into the rock. Hot-air-balloon flights at sunrise are the iconic experience; the surrounding Göreme Open-Air Museum (UNESCO-listed) preserves Byzantine cave-church frescoes. Türkiye has no formal DNV; eVisa and Kart-İkamet (residence permit) are the standard routes. The structural draws are the genuinely-unique landscape, very cheap pricing, and the cultural texture of underground cities (Derinkuyu, Kaymaklı) within day-trip distance.
Semi-arid (Anatolian highland) — at 1,000m altitude on the central Anatolian plateau. Winter (December–February, 0–2°C average) brings snow accumulation that produces dramatic snow-on-fairy-chimney landscapes. Summer (June–August, 20–23°C average) is dry and warm. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are the cleanest shoulder windows for hot-air-balloon flights (the iconic experience). UV is strong at altitude.
