Best for: Montevideo for nomads who want stability + ocean — South America's Uruguay-as-Switzerland.

Uruguay is the stable, expensive corner of South America — strong democracy, reliable institutions, banking that just works. The Permanent Residency path is real and the tax structure (foreign-source income exempt for 11 years for new tax residents) is one of the most generous in the region. Montevideo is the only nomad city; Punta del Este is summer-only.

Visa story

Tourist 90 days; Permanent Residency available with relatively low income test.

Open the per-city visa cards on each city page for the specific income tests, durations, and program names. None of this is legal advice — confirm with the consulate before booking.

How to extend your stay in Uruguay as a digital nomad

The standard pathway for nomads moving to Uruguay. Specific income tests, processing times, and document requirements live in the visa story above and per-city cards — these are the steps you take in order.

  1. Enter on a 90-day tourist visa

Uruguay grants 90 days visa-free to most passports (US, EU, UK, Canada, Australia all qualify). Border officers occasionally ask for proof of accommodation and onward travel; carry both.

  2. Extend once for an additional 90 days

One in-country extension is available through the Dirección Nacional de Migración. Apply at the Montevideo office before the initial 90 days expire; cost is ~$50 USD. Total stay 180 days.

  3. For longer stays, apply for Permanent Residency directly

Uruguay uniquely allows applying for Permanent Residency on a relatively low income test (~$1,500/mo pension, freelance, or remote-work income). Unlike most countries, there's no Temporary Residency intermediary — Permanent Residency is the direct path.

  4. Bring Apostilled documents

Birth certificate, marriage certificate (if applicable), criminal record check — all apostilled in your home country and translated into Spanish by a Uruguayan court translator (traductor público). The criminal record check has a short validity window — get it last in your document gathering.

  5. Register at Migración and get the cédula

Once your residency is approved (6–18 months processing), register at Dirección Nacional de Migración to receive your cédula. The cédula is what unlocks Uruguay's strong banking infrastructure and the Mercosur travel benefits.

  6. Plan for tax residency at 183 days

Uruguay grants new residents a 6-year tax holiday on foreign-source income — one of the most generous regimes in LatAm. After 6 years, foreign-source income is taxed at favorable rates (12% on financial income). Coordinate with a Uruguayan tax pro to register the holiday before becoming tax-resident.

Process subject to change — confirm current rules with the Uruguay consulate before booking flights.
